Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at  if you cannot find an answer to your question.

American Hero Initiative is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping disabled veterans with home and auto repairs.

The assistance amount from the American Hero Initiative will depend on the available funding at the time.  As we grow, we aim to expand this assistance further.

You will fill out an application and submit the necessary documents (DD-214, proof of service-connected disability; also, depending on funding availability we may also need income documents).  We will decide if your desired repair is necessary for healthy living and approve or deny your request.  If approved we will choose local contractors or repair-persons to get a quote.  From there, we will determine how much we can help with. You will then decide if you want the repairs done; if you do then you must pay the contractor your portion of the repair cost first.  Once we confirm the repair is done and your portion has been covered we will issue payment for the remainder of the cost directly to the worker.

Yes, you must have at least a 30% service-connected disability.

You can apply for assistance once every 365 days.

No. American Hero Initiative will contact a local contractor or repair-person to do the work.

No.  We will choose them for you.

Honestly it comes down to a few things:

  • Are you eligible? Are you an honorably discharged veteran with at least a 30% service connected disability?

  • Is the repair necessary to a healthy living environment?  (i.e.Does the issue cause a safety concern? Is it causing a financial burden? Is it impacting your livelihood?)  These are all questions we will consider.

  • Do we have funding available?  We may have to use your income to determine if your need is more dire than other veterans.  We don't weigh just the income, but also the severity of the repair needed, hardship, and other conditions.  The good news is, if you get denied due solely to our lack of funding you can reapply again in 30 days, rather than 365.
